Canberra Outdoor Shoot Locations

Some of my favourite outdoor locations to shoot in Canberra

Cooleman Ridge

This spot is probably one of the most versatile in Canberra. Able to be accessed from many different locations in Chapman and Kambah with a steep but short walk up the to the top of the ridge. There are sweeping views of the Brindabellas, plenty of grassy hills and big boulders to climb on. There are always a few kangaroos keeping watch in the distance while you watch the sunset!

Stirling Park, Yarralumla

A beautiful secluded bushland area in the heart of Canberra. This spot has lovely white gum trees and is shaded meaning it's perfect for a shoot at any time of the day. A short uphill walk from the carpark but very manageable.

Mount Stromlo Observatory

If you are after an outdoor location but with something that also has some structure then this is the spot for you! The Yale Columbia Dome was tragically burnt out by the 2003 bushfires, however the space that is left has so much character and if the perfect backdrop for photos. The observatory grounds are accessible via a road that is closed with a boom gate after hours so hours for shooting may be limited.

The Cotter River

The Cotter is the perfect spot for a summer swim or exploring along the banks of the river. There are plenty of different spots to explore depending on the type and length of the session. A great location for maternity and family photos, just be prepared to get a little wet! Some other river location options are Kambah Pool and Uriarra Crossing.

Weston Park, Yarralumla

One of my favourite locations for spring blossoms in Canberra! It is also a lovely spot for autumn leaves! Very accessible so its perfect for kids!

Lindsay Pryor National Arboretum

A beautiful quiet location near the lake. Plenty of trees as well as open spaces. This spot is also lovely in autumn! There is a bit more walking (very easy walk) so this spot is better suited for a 1 hour shoot!

Queanbeyan Nature Reserve

This is a lovely quiet nature reserve with large grassy areas and some shadier spots between the trees. Easily accessible so perfect for mini shoots.

Jerrabomberra Wetlands

This spot at the wetlands is not just for birdwatchers, perfect for exploring with little ones (or without them!). Very accessible as there is a footpath the whole way. The reeds are brown over winter and green over summer creating an interesting backdrop in any season.

Pialligo Redwoods

A lovely forest of redwoods near the Canberra airport. The forest has some darker moodier areas with deep greens and also some more open spaces to make the most of the golden sunset! Easily accessible from the carpark so its perfect for kids!

Lawson Crescent Viewing Deck

Located near the National Museum of Australia, this deck is the perfect spot to catch the sunset over the lake.

Regatta Point

Another great location to catch the sunset over the lake with views of all the Canberra landmarks too!

National Gallery of Australia (and surrounds)

The National Gallery of Australia and sculpture garden, as well as the surrounding Portrait Gallery, High Court and lake areas have so many great places to shoot if you want an outdoor location with a bit of a difference. Easily accessible and great for exploring with your partner or family.

National Arboretum

The National Arboretum is another location that is so versatile in terms of scenery. With stunning views over Canberra, plenty of different forests to explore and open spaces to take in the view of the sky and the sunset. The Arboretum changes with the seasons, with beautiful greens in summer and winter, autumn colours in autumn and blossoms in spring! Another bonus is most of the areas are accessible with a short walk from your car making is perfect for a mini shoot!

Please note that photography at the National Arboretum requires pre-approval (which I can seek) and attracts an additional fee of $390 incl gst which will be added to your invoice if you wish to shoot at the arboretum. See here for further information.
