Still Life for the Here and Now is a collaborative project between Canberran artists Lauren Sutton and Rhiannon Berry (aka The Roseologist), exploring the essence of Contemporary Still Life. With an emphasis on creating work with natural light in outdoor settings, their work highlights individual characteristic forms of botanical materials and the artistic composition that occurs through arranging and photographing them. As the project continues to evolve, Lauren and Rhiannon hope their work will shine a light on the simple pleasure of creating/viewing a thoughtfully considered composition, enriching the wider conversation related to artworks in this genre.
Series 1
Wildflower: Medium and Muse
2023 - 2024
Wildflower: Medium and Muse is a collection of 16 images created over a 17 month period, which is influenced by Japanese Ikebana floral arranging, Scandinavian design and mid-Century Modernism. The series draws on Lauren and Rhiannon’s shared love of Australian Native Wildflowers, adopting a paired back aesthetic that invites quiet contemplation of simple botanical arrangements.

In this new body of work, Lauren and Rhiannon have expanded their scope, referencing traditions of Classical Art, 17th Century Still Life Painting, film and theatre. Introducing rich colours, textures and elements of whimsy/play, the work explores themes of abundance, contemporary cultural tropes, and curated landscapes, existing at a deliberate point of tension between beauty and excess. Situating their arrangements in natural environments, and incorporating a range of handmade and sourced materials, broadens the possibilities for reimagining still life in a contemporary context.
